Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Therapy (PEMF) Quick Guide

Posted by John Stephens on

Is It New?

Electromagnetic Therapy has been used since the early 1900’s. Initially it was used by veterinarians to heal broken bones in racehorses. It wasn’t until 1950’s and beyond, that scientists such as Basset and Alan Dwyer began looking at PEMF as a treatment for humans.

Finally in 2004, PEMF was approved by the FDA for treatment of fractures and in 2008 for treatment of depression. Medical Electromagnetic therapy devices are now used worldwide.

Benefits of Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy

The most common use of PEMF includes pain relief, fast injury recovery and to increase pain. There have been hundreds of medical studies conducted on PEMF in the last few decades. Results have repeatedly shown the following effects to occur:

  • Reduced Pain
  • Reduced Inflammation
  • Increased range of motion
  • Faster Functional recovery
  • Reduced muscle loss after surgery
  • Increased tensile strength in ligaments
  • Faster healing of skin wounds
  • Enhanced capillary formation
  • Accelerated nerve regeneration

A PEMF device releases a pulse or waves of electromagnetic field that stimulates cellular function, increasing nutritional intake, respiration and healing effects. This has numerous physiological benefits on the human body including vasodilatation, analgesia, anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, antiedema (swelling), and healing acceleration.

    Types of Pulsed Electromagnetic Devices

    Power Level

The power level of PEMF varies according to its required usage. Most home users choose to purchase a lower level PEMF machine but in recent years, the high Voltage machines have become more affordable, although still quite expensive. Low to mid power devices are more affordable and although they take longer to feel effects, they are a good choice for everyone to stay pain free and help maintain general good health. They are also perfect for long term pain management use.

    Usage

Using low to mid power PEMF requires sustained continuous use to reap the full benefits of the device. High power PEMF devices can have seemingly miraculous effect when used for improving range of motion and reducing pain. Patients suffering from long term pain may need 2-3 sessions of PEMF per week for the first two to four weeks. Often, people with chronic conditions will purchase a pack of five or ten sessions of PEMF therapy with a high voltage machine and purchase a cheaper low to mid power device for daily use to speed and then maintain the positive effects.

The electromagnetic fields pass through the human body creating tiny electrical currents that cells can use to enhance energy production. Every cells can be positively affected which means muscles , tendons, ligaments, cartilage and nerves cells can potentially regenerate and healing can be induced. PEMF has been shown to increase range of motion in joints aiding long term movement and reducing pain.

    Applying PEMF on your Body

There are various PEMF devices on the market. Some apply electromagnetic fields in specific areas while others focus on the entire body. Either way the application of PEMF exposes the entire body to therapeutic magnetic field that stimulates beneficial cellular responses that amplifies healing.

PEMF therapy is now common place with anti ageing groups. If you are 50+ and would like to continue living life with energy, heal as you did in your 20's and live pain free then think about Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field therapy.
